SSAB and Metal Solutions start strategic partnership in fossil-free steel

Steel production represents a significant source of global CO2 emissions, with both virgin and recycled steel production contributing to emissions. The wider steel sector contributes almost a quarter of the world’s total industry CO2 emissions. By changing the way steel is produced, SSAB is at the forefront of efforts to cut emissions and create a fossil-free value chain with customers and partners regardless of whether the raw material is scrap or iron ore.
GreenCoat® colour coated steel from SSAB is already among Metal Solution’s most popular material choices for metal roofing and cladding. GreenCoat® is a brand of high-performance, environmentally friendly coating materials known for their exceptional durability, sustainability, and longevity, with a 50-year technical guarantee and a 25-year aesthetic coating guarantee. GreenCoat® colour-coated steels are already exceptionally sustainable, incorporating Swedish rapeseed oil instead of fossil oils.
With the recent addition of SSAB Zero™ SSAB provides a largely carbon emission-free steel based on recycled steel and fossil-free energy. It enables the production of SSAB’s existing steel grades and products with significantly lower carbon footprint, while maintaining the same premium quality, properties and dimensions.
The latest innovation is SSAB Fossil-free™ steel which is produced by using HYBRIT® technology. The revolutionary steelmaking technology using hydrogen reduced sponge iron, removes the primary source of CO2 emissions with water as by-product, instead of CO2.
Our new SSAB Fossil-free™ partnership supports SSAB with its plans and efforts to reinvent the value chain from the mine to the end customer, largely eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from operations. The fossil carbon emissions in SSAB’s production of SSAB Fossil-free™ steel are targeted to be less than 0.05 kg CO2e/kg steel in Scope 1, 2 and for iron ore upstream Scope 3, of the GHG Protocol.

How does virtually fossil-free work?
SSAB has long been a leader in sustainability. Together with its technical partners, SSAB developed HYBRIT® technology, the world’s first fossil-free steelmaking process. Instead of using coal, HYBRIT® technology replaces traditional blast furnaces with hydrogen-reduced sponge iron, emitting only water instead of CO2.
An average blast furnace creates 2,000kg of CO2 per tonne of steel, in comparison SSAB blast furnace production creates just 1,600kg of CO2. The new HYBRIT® technology creates just 25kg of CO2 per tonne of steel.
