WEATHERED CHARACTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE

Cor-Ten® weathering steel offers a distinctive architectural finish defined by its evolving natural patina. Initially resembling conventional carbon steel, the material gradually develops an oxidised outer layer when exposed to the environment, transforming from vibrant orange-brown tones to deeper earthy shades over time.

This constantly changing appearance makes Cor-Ten® a popular choice for façades, roofing, cladding, landscaping and feature elements where designers seek warmth, texture and individuality.

WHERE STYLE EVOLVES WITH THE SEASONS

Cor-Ten® steel is a high-strength, low-alloy steel known for its weathering properties. Developed to be used as a paint free material, the surface forms a natural oxide layer when exposed to the elements, giving it a distinctive aesthetic. Over time Cor-Ten® steel undergoes a transformation process, developing a rich patina which creates a visually striking and ever-changing façade that blends in with the environment.

Best suited to applications where sufficient drying allows the patina to stabilise effectively, Cor-Ten® steel is ideal for various applications such as outdoor sculptures, architectural elements, and structural components. Its naturally evolving patina avoids the need for painting or coating.

BENEFITS AND FEATURES

Cor-Ten® steel is considered environmentally friendly due to its longevity and minimal maintenance requirements. Its weathering process is a natural occurrence that does not involve harmful coatings or chemicals. From architectural elements to sculptures and structural components, Corten steel’s versatility allows it to be applied in a wide range of projects, offering flexibility in design and functionality.

Cor-Ten® steel’s unique aesthetic appeals to designers and architects for its adaptability in both modern and traditional settings, allowing for creative and diverse design possibilities. Despite its weathered appearance, Corten steel maintains its structural integrity, providing strength and reliability for a variety of applications, including architectural and structural projects.

THE PATINA FORMATION PROCESS OF WEATHERING STEEL

Patina Formation Process

Once it’s exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions, weathering steel begins to rust in the same fashion as non-weathering steel. However, as time passes, the rust layer transforms into a patina layer, and its colour changes from a fresh, newly developed orange-brown to a light or dark brown.

The speed of change and the final colour of a weather-resistant steel sheet are dependent on the atmospheric conditions of a site and the level of pollution. Sulphur-dense atmospheres will speed up the oxidation process and result in a darker patina. Frequent cycles of wet and dry conditions will also speed up oxidation. The entire oxidation process for this naturally weathering steel usually takes between 2–6 years.

APPLY NATURE

Cor-Ten® weathering steel is designed to evolve naturally over time. When exposed to the elements, the surface develops an oxidised patina layer that gradually changes in tone from bright orange-brown through to deeper earthy browns.

Unlike painted finishes, the appearance of Cor-Ten® continues to mature throughout its life, influenced by climate, orientation, rainfall, pollution and surrounding environmental conditions. Frequent cycles of wetting followed by drying help the patina stabilise most effectively.

As a naturally weathering material, Cor-Ten® should be carefully detailed to avoid permanently damp conditions, standing water and areas where moisture may become trapped through capillary action or poor drainage.

NATURAL WEATHERING CHARACTERISTICS

Cor-Ten® is an intentionally weathering steel designed to develop a natural oxidised patina over time. The appearance, rate of weathering and long-term performance of the material will vary depending on environmental conditions, atmospheric pollutants, installation design and exposure to moisture.

For optimal performance, Cor-Ten® should be detailed to encourage regular wet and dry cycling and to avoid prolonged moisture retention, standing water, debris build-up or capillary moisture traps.

During the early weathering stages, runoff staining may occur to adjacent materials and should be considered during design detailing. Due to the natural and variable oxidation process, no warranty or guarantee can be given regarding the final appearance, uniformity of patina, weathering rate or long-term surface condition of the material.
